HISTORY
OF THE COUNTY OF CASALARREINA
CASALARREINA
(Known from old as Naharruri)
Casalarreina is a village which
belongs to the Haro county. Its old name was Naharruri
, a toponym of Iberian origin and the name that
appears in all reports and documents of the 12th
and 13th centuries. It used to be a property of
the Lopez de Haro family, that in the 12th donated
it to the Cistercian monastery of Cañas.
It belonged to this monastery until the year 1404
when it was sold as a ground rent (censo enfiteutico)
to the village of Haro, having the monastery the
direct dominion over the place.
In 1511 it became a property
of the Haro Counts and the Frias Dukes, changing
its name to Casa de la Reina (=House of the Queen)
as apparently the Queen Juana la Loca used to
dwell in the Condestables Palace.
In 1524, The Pope Adrian attended
the inauguration of the Dominican Nunnery of Piety
accepting the Bishop of Calahorra`s invitation,
who had paid all the costs.
In 1671 it managed to split
from the Haro County and got the condition of
independent Place and Villa (Lugar y Villa independiente)
taking the name of Casalarreina.
Due to its strategic location
as a passing area toward Miranda de Ebro, Logroño,
Burgos (through Belorado), Haro and Santo Domingo
de la Calzada, in the 16th ,17th and 18th centuries
many roads and paths were built as well as the
stone bridge over the Oja River
